If anyone knows where there might be an unclaimed $1000.00 buried in the dirt within walking distance of my house, please tell me. Also if you know any place I might be able to curl up and die without being disturbed. They say tragedies come in three so I have one more to go this month. Please God, let the third one be armageddon.
Chris Day’s Ccontents Magazine #1 (no that’s not a typo) showed up today. You can get a copy from here.
As many of you know a large fire consumed much of Open Space last night. It burned from 6:30 pm till beyond 9 o clock, destroying many of the auto shops in the building, as well as several practice spaces, studios, print shops and of course, the homes of many who lived above the building. No one was badly hurt. This morning, when we returned to the gallery at 10 am, we found mine and Ledelle’s work humid and pungent, but not unsalvageable. I couldn’t help but feel how strange it was to see our work installed dark cave, smelling like ash. Soon after, the tennants were told they had till 5 pm to leave Open Space. Maybe those residents know more at this point, but it was my understanding that the integrity of the building is severely compromised. We’ve spent all day packing up the belongings of those who’ve lived there; It’s exhausting and there’s a lot of loss…but also a lot of incredible teamwork, outreach, and care.http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/arts/artsmash/bal-artwork-saved-in-open-space-fire-20130502,0,5251574.story
Anyway. This opening will not be happening tomorrow night. I truly believe that something positive will emerge from all of this, and as the work is mostly unscathed there may be another configuration of the work at a future date. At this point though, there’s no resolution, just strange photos of my drawings in a flooded room and an entire roof— once the location of a blooming garden—blackened, caved-in, and punctured by twisted i-beams. Thanks for all the support you’ve given to me and Ledelle and Max, as well as everyone who lives there and has inevitably lost something in the fire.Until then,Miranda

I’m beyond joyful & relieved that everyone is ok, and that all the artwork & most of the impotant stuff could be retrieved. Yesterday was weirdly beautiful, so so many people came to help move everything out. Now its sinking in, though, that this building with so many beautiful memories is toast. Open Space will retranslate in some form, I’m sure, but my heart feels incredibly low for this concrete & tar shantytown.
This is our practice space
Thank you sooooo much to everyone who helped out at Open Space today and to those folks in the community who continue to offer support and love for all those involved. The outreach from the community has been humbling to say the least and I know that everyone at OS is endlessly appreciative!
The building that houses Open Space in Baltimore MD is currently on fire. the back portion of the building, which contained my screen-printing equipment, Weekend’s gear, Witch Hat’s gear, Raindeer’s gear, and several other bands equipment has already burned and collapsed to the ground. I learned more from reading this article than I did from any police on the scene. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/north-baltimore/bs-md-ci-fire-sisson-street-20130501,0,6609175.story
2013 is now officially the worst year ever. I thought it had a chance of looking up after the colossal turd that was the first few months but this just took a biiiiiiiig shit on all my hopes for the year.
